Receivership

Definition

A court's appointment of a neutral person — a receiver — to take control of property or a business to preserve it during a dispute or to satisfy a judgment. The receiver answers to the court.

Hypothetical

Two partners deadlock and the company's cash is disappearing. A court appoints a receiver to run the business and protect its assets until the lawsuit between the partners is resolved.
