Glossary Term

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

Definition

The high standard of proof required to convict in a criminal case — enough certainty that a reasonable person would not hesitate to rely on it in their most important affairs.

Hypothetical

The jury thinks the defendant probably did it, but has a real, reasoned doubt. Because 'probably' is not 'beyond a reasonable doubt,' they must acquit.
